MANLEY TIMELINE

1971: Graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Carleton University.
1976: Graduated from the University of Ottawa Law School.
From 1977: Practised business and income tax law in Ottawa as a partner with the firm of Perley-Robertson, Panet, Hill and McDougall.
1985: Became chairman of the Ottawa-Carleton Board of Trade.
1988: First elected in 1988 as member of Parliament.
1992: Appointed official Opposition critic for transport.
1993: Appointed minister of industry.
1996: Appointed minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, minister of western economic diversification, and minister responsible for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for Quebec.
October 17, 2000: Appointed minister of foreign affairs; became chairman of the ad-hoc cabinet committee on public security and anti-terrorism after the attacks of September 11, 2001.
January 15, 2002: Named deputy prime minister of Canada and minister of infrastructure and Crown corporations.
June 2002: In a cabinet shuffle, was named minister of finance.
April 10, 2003: Officially kicked off his campaign to run for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada.

July 22, 2003: Quits Liberal leadership race.
